The SLC exams are finally over and I hope our police wallahs will be more prepared next year when they face hundreds or even thousands of angry villagers, pelting stones at them for not letting our great students cheat.
Yes, the fast approaching SLC exam has been a matter of everyone’s tension. The parents whose children are sitting for it are simply in tension just as much as the children themselves are in an unending pressure. The principals on the other hand, especially those from private or boarding schools, are no less tense in the face of cut-throat competition among the private schools.
Students are scolded, spanked and threatened to get distinctions or first divisions. They themselves think an avalanche would bury them down if they don’t stand up to the expectations of people around them. So, they knuckle and buckle up their best to score good marks. Some get broad smiles when handed over the mark sheets while others curse their luck for their low marks.
Students are required to write correct answers with appropriate layout and format to secure good marks. Answers with attractive handwriting, design and layout will be extra advantage for the candidates. It has been found out that the students, despite writing the correct answers, have not got marks as much as they deserve.
SLC Stuff may be gaining popularity but Tiwari is not satisfied. He has a vision to make the website a universal bank of SLC questions for all students to use, but he faces various obstructions. The website is very difficult to maintain alone, he tells us, and using a free online hosting service restricts his web-storage space to a mere 40 MB.
The SLC-failed have probably already applied for passports and have begun to make rounds of manpower agencies for work abroad. The ones who have passed, especially from schools in small towns and villages, have no easy options, either.Theoretically speaking, once again, it is possible to get quality higher-secondary education at any district headquarters of Nepal. However, markets do not function that way.
The Higher Secondary education concept or 10 +2 was introduced in Nepal by the MoE in 1994 in Buddhanilkantha School, as many private schools balked at the idea. Presently, there are many educational institutions that are running classes for the Higher Secondary Board Examinations. Additionally a number of educational institutions in Nepal are doing examinations such as ‘O’ & ‘A’ level of different Boards, or the International Baccalaureate.
Attitude towards SLC failed students must be re-examined to maximize their potential. The examination’s tendency to eliminate potential talent far too early in the game is alarming. The academic prowess of students at the age of 16 is not fully predictive of their long-term ability to contribute to the economy.

“Securing the highest marks in SLC doesn’t mean that your future is bright. You have to be more hard working in higher education,” opined Gyawali who speaks out of experience.
The School Leaving Certificate (SLC) exam result is out with a disappointing pass percentage. Only 55.5 percent students passed this year, about 9 percentage points less than last year. This is the second year in a row that the SLC pass percentage has slid. Last year, only 64 percent students got through the Iron Gate, four percentage points less than the previous year.
