The Bachelor of Technology in Environmental Engineering program was launched in Kathmandu University in 2005 as an interdisciplinary and timely field of study to bridge the gap between Science and Engineering.

Bachelor of Technology in Environmental Engineering focuses on the basic understanding of the environmental problems and their mitigation through appropriate and environmentally friendly technologies. The student will acquire knowledge and skill of Environmental Engineering which is designed to develop human resources in the areas of economic development, improvement and transfer of appropriate technologies, the abatement of pollution and minimization of the environmental risk of development works by using environment friendly technologies and engineering methods.

Admission

Application for admission to the program is  generally invited in the beginning of July. Application forms can be obtained from the university’s central office at Dhulikhel or it can be downloaded from http://www.ku.edu.np/admission/admission.htm. To be eligible for applying, the candidate must have completed Intermediate in Science or Class XII in Science, or equivalent with at least 50% marks in aggregate and 50% in physics, chemistry, and ,mathematics in average. Applicant’s proficiency in prerequisites (physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics) is tested through a written  admission test. After written test short-listed candidates are called for interview to access their aptitude then the list of candidates eligible for admission is published. The session starts from the first week of August.
 
Cost and Financial Aids
 
The total cost for the B.Tech programs is NRs. 450,000 which can be paid to the Kathmandu University in 16 stallments. Kathmandu University provides loan scholarships and financial aid for needy students.
 
Curriculum
 
Bachelor of Technology in Environmental Engineering is an interdisciplinary program, comprising courses for basic sciences, applied sciences, socioeconomic and  legal aspects along with the concepts of engineering and other specialized courses required in the concern field. The total credits offered during the entire program are 152, and the percentage distribution of credits among the various categories is as follows:-
  1. Engineering: 24%
  2. Interdisciplinary/ Skill: 20%
  3. Environment: 23%
  4. Project work: 8%
  5. Basic Science: 25%
 
Future Prospectus
 
Graduates of Kathmandu University's four year B.Tech degree in Environmental Engineering have a number of key advantages for future study or work. The degree is recognized by universities all over the world and graduates are eligible for direct admission into Master's programs abroad. The degree is also recognized by the Nepal Engineering Council and enables graduates to compete for positions in government agencies. Moreover, the rigorous practical and project based training prepares KU graduates for internships and entry level positions in NGOs, INGOs, private firms and community based organizations. Higher level graduate studies are recommended for long term career placement and advancement in this field of endeavor.

The classes are held at the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, School of Science, Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel. The university is located on a hilltop with 17 hectares of land, 28 km east of the capital.
