A high-level committee formed to recommend fees for courses run by Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) has finally come up with the draft of its report.
According to a member of the committee, it has recommended that colleges be allowed to charge up to Rs 400,000, Rs 350,000 and Rs 250,000 for nursing, general medicine and pharmacy courses respectively.
“Though there are 45 different subjects offered by CTEVT, we have recommended fee structures for three subjects only –– nursing, general medicine and pharmacy,” said Suprabhat Bhandari, president of Guardians Association, Nepal.
The committee was slated to submit the report to Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, Minister for Local Development, who is also looking after the Education Ministry, but it had to be put off due to the minister’s busy schedule, said Bhandari, a member of the panel.
The committee was formed by then education minister Ganga Lal Tuladhar, a member of the Jhala Nath Khanal Cabinet, after guardians and students complained that colleges were charging exorbitant fees.
The ten-member committee was formed on July 26 under Khag Raj Baral, then director of the Department of Education, to recommend ways to maintain uniformity in fees of colleges affiliated to CTEVT.
CTEVT affiliated colleges have been charging more than Rs 500,000 for two-year nursing course and other courses. “We have also recommended that number of seats in the courses be increased from 40 to 45 and scholarship be provided to six students,” Bhandari added.
Ramesh Bakhati, exam controller at CTEVT, who is member secretary of the committee, said the fees should be determined taking into account infrastructure and facilities provided by the colleges. The student-teacher ratio should also be considered, he remarked. He stated that the CTEVT will direct colleges to follow the new fees provision after the board approves the report.
