Agitating professors today staged an hour-long sit-in in front of the central offices of all universities to protest against recent appointments of vice-chancellors.

At a press meet today, Minister Tuladhar urged the organisations of the university teachers concerned to come for talks. The university teachers’ organisations have padlocked various universities following the appointment of the Vice-Chancellors a week back.

The new VCs couldn’t assume office as the offices were padlocked in Pokhara, Purbanchal, Nepal Sanskrit University. And offices are yet to be set up in Agriculture and Forestry, Madhamanchal universities.

The Far-west Regional University Struggle Committee has announced a three-day general strike in the region from today after the government failed to fulfill their demands. A meeting of the struggle committee on Sunday decided to organize the three-day shutdown in the region to press the government for fulfilling its demand.

Nepal Democratic Professors’ Association and Nepal National Professors’ Organization on Tuesday indefinitely padlocked the central office of Tribhuvan University to protest “unilateral” appointments of Vice-Chancellors (VCs) in universities by the government on Monday.

The struggle committee returned its protest programme giving 10-day long ultimatum to the government and warns of stern protest if their demand were not addressed during the time.

Kanchanpur district bore the brunt as a pressure group enforced a general strike to press for the establishment of a university in the Far-Western Region.

 Following a meeting with political leaders, lawmakers and representatives of civil society, Education Minister Ganga Lal Tuladhar on Thursday decided to provide additional Rs 60 million for the Far-Western University.
